A shared device changes where account information can appear. Review the device before signing in rather than relying on a private browsing window alone.
Map the visible surfaces
Check browser profiles, password storage, email access, notifications and download folders. Decide whether this is a suitable device for a private account. A separate browser profile can organize activity, but it should not be treated as protection against another person who controls the device.
Understand private browsing
Mozilla explains that private browsing does not make you anonymous and that downloaded files can remain on the computer. Keep that limitation separate from local-history settings. Do not download receipts or profile images to a shared folder and assume closing the window removes them.
Keep recovery possible
Choose an email account you control and a password you do not reuse. Review where confirmation and recovery messages will arrive. If another person can read the inbox or approve account recovery, browser privacy settings will not solve that access problem.
End the session completely
Sign out, close the session and check whether the account was saved for quick login. Remove only your own temporary material from the shared device. If you cannot establish a comfortable boundary, use a device under your control before continuing.

Decide whether the device is suitable at all
Begin with who controls the computer or tablet. A borrowed, workplace-managed or jointly administered device may have settings you cannot inspect or change. A separate browser profile can organize your own activity, but it is not a reliable boundary against someone with broader device access. If the account would create serious discomfort if seen, the practical choice may be to wait for a device you control. No checklist can turn an environment you do not control into a guarantee of private use.
Walk through the account lifecycle
Think beyond the login page. Registration may generate a confirmation email; a purchase may create a receipt; recovery may send a message to another address or device. List where each item would appear. This reveals problems that clearing browsing history would not address. For instance, a private window does not make a shared email inbox private. Choose an account you control for recovery and check the visible recipient information before submitting a form. Keep your own ability to regain access in view while minimizing unnecessary exposure.
Read the browser boundary accurately
Mozilla’s private-browsing guidance distinguishes local browsing history from anonymity. Private browsing does not hide activity from every website, network or person with device control. Downloads can remain after the private window closes. If you save a receipt, know where the file goes and whether that folder is shared or synchronized. Do not assume the absence of a history entry means the session left no other trace. Use private browsing for the limited function the browser documents, rather than treating its name as a promise about the entire device.
Try a harmless visibility rehearsal
Before opening a sensitive account, use an ordinary non-sensitive page to inspect where browser notifications appear and whether downloads land in a shared folder. Review settings directly instead of sending unnecessary test messages to another person. Check whether the browser offers to save passwords or keep a session signed in. The rehearsal should involve only your own settings and material. Avoid changing another household member’s account configuration or deleting shared data. If the visibility remains unclear, stop and use a more suitable device rather than experimenting with private information.
Make closing the session a repeatable action
Sign out through the service, close the relevant windows and check whether a saved account tile still permits quick entry. Inspect your own downloaded files and any password-saving prompt you accepted. Removing a local file does not necessarily remove a synchronized copy, so understand the storage location before saving sensitive material there. A short exit checklist is easier to remember than a complicated cleanup ritual. Better still, avoid creating unnecessary downloads and persistent sessions in the first place. Keep legitimate receipts somewhere you control if you need them for billing support.
Review the plan when access changes
A new browser profile, shared tablet, repair visit or account synchronization change can alter the setup you previously checked. Revisit the visible surfaces after such changes. Do not promise yourself that one successful review settles privacy permanently. The useful result is a current understanding of the device’s limitations and a decision you are comfortable making within them. If somebody else needs access to the device, arrange your own accounts accordingly without trying to conceal changes to their settings or interfere with their use of shared resources.
